Ukraine fields AI machine-gun turrets against drones, seeks faster deployment
Ukraine is using AI-controlled machine-gun turrets for battlefield air defense and wants to speed deployment. Defense innovation platform Brave1 says these systems downed dozens of drones over Kyiv last month. AI detects, locks onto and tracks targets, but Sky Sentinel, developed by Carmine Sky, still requires an operator’s approval to fire.

What to know
- 01
Sky Sentinel uses a Browning M2 .50-caliber machine gun and can rotate 360 degrees.
- 02
Brave1 says the turrets have downed at least 60 targets under a civilian air-defense pilot program that allows Ukrainian private companies to buy air-defense equipment and train civilians.
Why it matters
Given their limited range, these turrets mainly provide close-in defense and are one of Ukraine’s tools for countering Russian drones.
