Chinese Academy of Sciences team proposes dendrite-sensing solid electrolyte
Researchers at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, have proposed a composite solid electrolyte that senses lithium dendrites. Inorganic nanoparticles act as sensing units, protected by a polymer electrolyte. When dendrites breach the polymer and contact the inorganic material, interfacial reactions generate a voltage signal. The study found that this response can warn of dendrites before severe internal short-circuiting.

What to know
- 01
Existing safety monitoring mainly uses external temperature and pressure sensors, which struggle to directly detect early, localized failures inside batteries.
- 02
The design maintains lithium-ion transport while preventing direct contact between inorganic components and lithium metal during normal cycling.
Why it matters
Rechargeable lithium batteries are used in portable electronics, electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage, making detection of internal safety risks relevant to these applications.
