Microsoft plans three photo-viewing options in Windows 11
Microsoft plans to rename the existing Windows 11 Photos app Photo Viewer for opening and editing individual images, while introducing a new Photos app combining local, OneDrive and Apple iCloud media. Alongside File Explorer’s existing Gallery, this would provide three viewing options. Some Windows Insider members have been invited to test the changes.

What to know
- 01
Relight will expand beyond Copilot+ PC to all Windows 11 devices, but natural-language search for local photos will still require Copilot+ PC.
- 02
The new Photos app will not require a Microsoft account login or automatically upload local files; on-device photos will remain accessible offline.
Why it matters
For Windows 11 users, the plan concerns access to photo viewing, organization and editing tools, along with their device requirements.
